Deacon B.W. Swanson, a beloved husband, father, brother, and dedicated servant to his community, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, in Lancaster, Texas, at 83. Born on March 29, 1941, in Ponta, Texas, B.W.’s journey through life was marked by devotion, resilience, and unwavering faith.
B.W. Swanson proudly served his country with honor and distinction in the United States Navy for over ten years. During his military career, he was part of the Vietnam Campaign, serving three tours on the USS Ranger (CVA-61), USS Niagara Falls (AFS-3), and USS Midway. His commitment to safeguarding his nation was a testament to his courage and dedication, leaving a legacy of bravery and service.
In 1977, B.W. joined the Center of Hope Community Church in Oakland, California, where he found not only his spiritual calling but also his life partner. It was here that he met his loving wife, Jerry Dean Swanson. Under the guidance of Bishop Earnestine Cleaveland-Reems, B.W. was ordained as a deacon, beginning his lifelong mission of service and faith.
Following his military service, B.W. dedicated 38 years to the United States Postal Service, where he was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. His career at the postal service was marked by dedication and a commitment to excellence.
In 1989, B.W. and his family moved to Texas, where he continued his spiritual journey as a deacon at several churches, including El Bethel Church of God in Christ in Garland, Gospel Tabernacle in Seagoville, and the Potter’s House of Dallas. At the Potter’s House, he also served on the Security Team, ensuring the safety and well-being of the congregation with the same dedication he showed in all aspects of his life.
B.W. leaves behind his loving wife, Jerry Dean Swanson, who stood by his side through life’s many adventures. Together, they built a family filled with love and warmth. He was a devoted father to his children: Sonji L. Swanson, Billy T. Swanson, April S. Myles, and Joshua T. Swanson. He is predeceased by his daughter, DaVanna Legette, and will be joyfully reunited with her in the afterlife.
He is also survived by his siblings: Lonnie D. Sheppard, Albert P. Sheppard, Carolyn Swanson, and Virginia Swanson. B.W. is predeceased by his siblings: Wanda Brown, Viola Stubblefield, Margaret Sue Sheppard, Billy Wayne Sheppard, and Gregory Swanson.
Deacon B.W. Swanson’s life was a testament to the power of love, service, and faith. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
