WILMER – Wilmer Mayor Sheila Petta was named this week in the newspaper Noticias Southwest as one of the “Indomitable Women Mayors”  of Texas.

Noticias Southwest, is an independent newsgroup covering Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, and the U.S. border region.

Petta was one of 15 women mayors from the State of Texas featured in the article. She is the only mayor featured in the article from, not only the Best Southwest, but the entire Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The article came to fruition when the writer explained she had been challenged to write about the “highly-touted strength and resilience of Texas women.”

Over 20 mayors were interviewed and Petta was one of the final interviews chosen as an indomitable woman mayor in the state.

The article points out Petta, who has served as Wilmer’s Mayor since 2020 and began a new mayoral term this month, is the real thing.

Prior to winning her mayor’s seat she sat on the Wilmer Planning and Zoning Commission in 2012, was elected to Wilmer City Council for two terms from 2015 to 2019, was appointed to the Texas Municipal League where she on the TML Small Cities Advisory Council in 2021, and she also went on to serve on the North Texas Mayors Council and the Best Southwest Partnership Board. She also received the Texas Municipal League Institute’s Certified Municipal Official (CMO) designation in 2022.

While the article described Petta as “quiet, open, doesn’t demand much attention,” it also appropriately pointed out “In contrast to her authenticity and enduring sincerity, Petta today sits atop a small-town-Texas municipal dynamo positioned to transform itself into a major economic engine.”

With the changes in Wilmer driven by Petta and her staff, she always muses “Wilmer is a small town, but we are making a big difference in the area. Whatever I do now or in the future, it is to assure the residents of Wilmer continue to enjoy our country feel alongside opportunities that will increase the standard of living here.”
