THE WINNER IS… SHERIFF MARIAN BROWN

From Staff Reports

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price and Sheriff Marian Brown share a light moment as results poured in on Tuesday evening.

Due to tornado and severe weather warnings that caused power outages across the county, polling locations were opened two hours late, with results coming in two hours after the rescheduled 9:00p.m. closing.

Supporters gathered at Kitchen+Kocktails in downtown Dallas to cheer Brown on to victory. The night ended with Brown holding a substantial lead over runoff opponent, former Sheriff Lupe Valdez.

Sheriff Brown is the first African American Sheriff in Dallas County and one of only three African American female sheriffs in the United States.

She is approaching 40 years in law enforcement, after beginning her career with Duncanville Police Department.

The University of Texas at Arlington has had a distinguished career and with her garnering almost 70% of the vote, clearly the citizens are satisfied with her job and without a Republican opponent in November, she retains her seat for another four years.

Earlier this year, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) completed its unannounced inspection of the Dallas County Jail, and the Dallas County Jail passed with several high marks.

As Sheriff, Brown is responsible for the Dallas County Jail and the more than 2,000 employees.
