Statement on the 2022 Midterm Elections

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has centered and promoted participation in American democracy since our founding in 1913. The 2022 midterm election was no exception, with our sorors and chapters offering strategic, robust leadership in efforts to register, educate and mobilize voters to the polls in the communities we serve.

President Elsie Cooke Holmes

Our social action network, from the National Social Action Commission to local chapter social action committees – worked diligently to provide sorors with vital information about the issues and candidates on the ballot this election year. Our well-informed and motivated sorors and chapters then executed successful voter education and mobilization strategies in communities nationwide. From implementing voter registration drives to hosting candidate forums and organizing Election Day mobilization efforts, Deltas delivered! I’m especially grateful for the more than 4,000 sorors that joined our four national civic engagement webinars to prepare and re-tool for the elections.

In addition to our Sorority’s collective efforts, individual members exercised their civic duty in meaningful ways. They volunteered in the community, raised money for candidates, got the word out about ballot proposals they supported, served as poll workers, and, of course, they voted.

Hon. Jasmine Crockett

We also salute the many members of Delta Sigma Theta who ran for office in this critical election and commend these sorors for answering the call to lead as public servants. To that end, our National Social Action Commission produced a directory highlighting 116 members representing each of our seven regions who were candidates for elected office on November 8th.

Congratulations to every soror who won their respective race! We extend a special congratulations to our sensational seven newly elected and reelected sorors in Congress:

  • Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D-OH 3rd District)
  • Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY 9th District)
  • Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX 30th District)
  • Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (D-NC 4th District)
  • Congresswoman Summer Lee (D-PA 34th District)
  • Congresswoman Lucy McBath (D-GA 7th District)
  • Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett (Virgin Islands’ At-Large Congressional District)

Sorors, we are so proud of you and look forward to all you will continue to do to empower our communities and elevate our impact! An update to the directory will be published in the coming weeks to reflect those now serving in office.

While we are proud of Delta Sigma Theta’s civic leadership during this election year, we recognize that we must not become complacent and that the road toward equity and justice for all continues. So, in the spirit of our beloved Founders, we will continue to move forward with fortitude and elevate our voices to bring about the progress that will better our nation and the world.
