Letter From Emmett Till’s Mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, To Curtis King

Among the many original historical documents of Curtis King and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL), the mother of Emmett Till, Mamie Till-Mobley, wrote a letter to King in 1993 following her participation in the 30th Anniversary of the March on Washington.

King, who was the creator, producer and director of a special Performing and Visual Arts March on Washington Salute at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington,DC), invited Ms. Till-Mobley to be a part of the historic performance which also included the likes of Eartha Kitt, Halle Berry, Esther Rolle, Billy Preston, Vickie Winans, Tonea Stewart, Richard Smallwood, Dick Gregory, Yolanda King, Patti Austin, Hal Williams, news anchors Dan Rather and Carole Simpson, and many more!

We want to share a piece of our original TBAAL Archival treasure, housed on the University of North Texas campus, in tandem with the upcoming airing of the ABC television Emmitt Till special, which reveals the first look at WOMEN OF THE MOVEMENT, the limited series telling the story of Mamie Till- Mobley. Starring Adrienne Warren as Till-Mobley and Cedric Joe as her son, Emmett Till, the drama depicts the harrowing reality of Till’s brutal murder and the manner in which his mother’s life, and the world, forever changed.
