The community has united in an extraordinary display of solidarity, raising more than $500,000 through a verified GoFundMe campaign for the family of Sonya Massey. The 36-year-old mother was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy on July 6, after she called 911 to report a prowler in her backyard. This substantial outpouring of support arrives as the family intensifies their quest for justice in the wake of her tragic death.
An update posted to the fundraiser on Tuesday reads: “Your contributions have been instrumental in our fight and will help us all heal after this tragedy. The work is far from over though, and we hope that you will continue to say Sonya’s name and keep her legacy alive!”
The GoFundMe campaign was created by Massey’s father, James Wilburn, and her uncle, Raymond Massey. The funds will be used to cover legal fees, mental health counseling, and other expenses associated with seeking justice for Sonya Massey.
The fatal incident occurred when officers responded to Massey’s 911 call reporting a prowler. Shortly after their arrival, Massey was shot in the face after uttering the words, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” Her sudden death has left her family devastated, losing a beloved mother, daughter, and sister in an instant.
Sonya Massey is remembered as a devoted and caring mother to her two children, a 17-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter. She cherished cooking, doing hair, nurturing her children, and spending quality time with her family. Sonya was also an active and committed member of her church.
Despite the overwhelming support received so far, the family continues to need financial assistance to cover ongoing costs. These include mental health counseling, travel expenses, and household support as they miss work to pursue justice.
James Wilburn, who started the GoFundMe, emphasized the importance of the community’s support: “This is the official GoFundMe established in Sonya Massey’s honor to help provide Sonya’s family with financial support during this difficult time. The love and support have been tremendous, but our family needs financial support as we fight for justice.”

The GoFundMe campaign also addresses common questions to reassure donors about the legitimacy and purpose of the funds. The funds will be managed by Mr. Wilburn and Mr. Massey to cover medical and legal costs associated with pursuing justice for Sonya Massey.
