Chairman Hinojosa on President Biden’s Second State of the Union Address

AUSTIN, Texas — Tonight, following President Biden’s second State of the Union address, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement: “Tonight, we express our gratitude to President Biden and the entire Biden-Harris Administration for two years of historic accomplishments on issues critical to Texas – and for working day-in and day-out to improve the wellbeing of hardworking Texas families. “When President Biden took office two years ago, our nation was in a state of complete crisis. Nearly 4,000 Americans were dying from COVID every day. 10 million Americans were unemployed. Schools, businesses, and factories were shut down. Lines at food banks stretched as far as the eye could see. “But today, thanks to the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration, Texas is not just back, but feeling the Biden Boom: Jobs and wages are up, a record number of Americans are getting back to work, unemployment is at 50-year lows, the national deficit is down, and – thanks to the Administration’s strong economic actions in partnership with our Texas Democrats in the House – inflation is finally loosening its grip on Texas families. “As the President said tonight, there is still so much work to do, but President Biden’s record of delivering for Texas is undeniable: Along with Texas Democrats, the Biden-Harris Administration is finally getting Texas veterans the resources and care they need. They’re making tangible progress in combating crime in our cities – and ending gun violence in our communities, as President Biden pledged to the families of Uvalde he would do. They’re working to secure our border, tackle the opioid crisis, and put a stop to fentanyl trafficking into and within our country. They’re making historic investments in transportation infrastructure and technological manufacturing – especially here in Texas. “President Biden has simultaneously been a steady hand on the wheel and a transformational leader for our state. From putting Texans back to work, to working to replace our lead pipes and improve our aging infrastructure, to enacting policies that will benefit countless hard-working Texans – such as capping the price of insulin that Texas seniors have to pay out-of-pocket every month or working to eliminate junk fees – the Biden-Harris administration continues to fight for everyday Texans. “Now, we must look forward. As President Biden said, we must finish the job. It’s disheartening that House Republicans have signaled they will only work this Congress to obstruct Democrats’ forward-moving agenda – in favor of pushing their 30% national sales tax, devastating cuts to Medicare and Social Security, and political theater show investigations. “But we know that the Biden-Harris Administration and our Texas Democrats are determined fighters, and they’ll continue to keep their heads down and deliver real results to make life better for Texas’ working families.”
