The Alpha Merit Group Committee, Inc. was established in 1964 by Bro. Earnest Wallace. Committed to excellence in scholarship, the Alpha Merit Program initially supported eighty-five boys from predominantly
black schools in Dallas. Over the years, the program has mentored over 20,000 boys and awarded over $150,000 in scholarships. Their structured program aims to enhance leadership skills, promote academic excellence, and broaden the social skills of young males in the Dallas area.
Alpha Merit Group Committee, Inc. is affiliated with the Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the oldest African American Greek-letter organization in the United States and abroad. The group is composed of professional men from various walks of life who play diverse roles in the DFW community.
The Alpha Merit Group co-sponsors programs such as College Fairs, Go-To-High School Go-To-College, Project Alpha, and in-school mentoring. Their three signature events are the College Fair, Annual Pancake Breakfast, and the Scholar-ship Beautillion. The College Fair provides crucial information to prospective institutions, while the Pancake Breakfast serves as an annual fundraiser. These proceeds, along with others, help fund over $15,000 in scholarships awarded during the Earnest Wallace Scholarship Beautillion. Scholarships are granted based on scholastic achievement, community service, and a 1,500-word essay on topics selected by the Alpha Merit Board.
