Garland Independent School District (GISD) officials understand that reading is essential and digital is the new wave. GISD introduced a platform, myON, for their students to log on and access 6,000 books.

This new initiative is under the Literacy for Life umbrella, a community-wide partnership catering to literacy needs. The purpose of this initiative is to provide more of a personalized library, expand bilingual programs, and serve the dyslexia community.

“District leadership is committed to establishing community-focused initiatives like Literacy for Life to support the enrichment of our tri-cities,” officials said.

Each student’s account will be able to have access to unlimited age-appropriate books and news articles; and be able to select language from either English or Spanish.

GISD students clicked onto 974,000 books last year and read more than 23 million pages in a span of about nine million minutes.
