Council Member Carolyn King Arnold Discusses Domestic Violence Awareness Month

DALLAS – October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Statistics estimate that one in three women and one in nine men in Texas will experience domestic violence at some point in their life.

“Since 2019, Dallas has seen an increase in crime. In particular, family violence aggravated assaults increased 8.6 percent over last year, and when it comes to family violence homicides, well, one is one too much,” said Council member Carolyn King Arnold, District 4. “I encourage people who see or hear accounts of family violence to say something as that call could save a life.”

“Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time to recognize and honor survivors, and this year, it’s more imperative than ever to know the available resources and ways to get help,” said Jan Langbein, CEO of Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support. “In Texas, one in three women will experience abuse in her lifetime, and women of color are at even higher risk.”

On Monday, October 12, Council Member Jennifer S. Gates will present the results of the 2020 Domestic Violence Task Force to the Dallas City Council Public Safety Committee. It will broadcast live on Spectrum Cable Channel 95 and online at bit.ly/cityofdallastv. The report may be viewed in advance on the District 13 Domestic Violence Task Force Website.
