Homecoming Celebrations Live On

Historically Black Colleges and Universities students should be celebrating on their campuses right now but instead they are gathering online for their “family reunions.”

HBCU alum, Tiffany Hoyd, decided to not let COVID-19 to deter her from having fun and reconnecting with her friends. She graduated from Howard University in 2019, and she joined other alums for a virtual celebration over the weekend.

“Some of our greatest experiences of our 20s was at YardFest and Howard’s Homecoming,” Hoyd said.

With the climate of police brutality and a pandemic, Hoyd and her peers needed this virtual space more than ever.

“Howard is celebrating another year of educating the next generation of Black leaders,” Hoyd said. “It’s a badge of pride for us to celebrate this rich tradition even though we can’t be on the yard.”

Other organizations, such as Support Black College, are also hopping on the virtual bandwagon with the virtual HBCU Homecoming kicking off October 21 and running until October 25 with several participants including actor Anthony Anderson and artist Kirk Franklin.
