Chicken Wings Test Positive for Coronavirus

It seems nothing is safe from COVID-19. This week, a number of imported, frozen chicken wings from Brazil tested positive for the coronavirus, causing national health officials to examine if food can transmit the virus to humans. Brazil currently has the second-highest rate of COVID-19 infection in the world with more than 3.4 million confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States leads the world with more than 5.5 million confirmed cases.

The contaminated wings were discovered and tested by disease control centers in China where the original outbreak was first reported. For consumers wondering if they can continue eating the popular poultry, health experts encourage remembering how the virus is spread.

“You have to remember how COVID-19 is spread,” said Dr. Jen Caudle, a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Associate Professor in the department of Family Medicine at Rowan University.  “It’s usually spread through person to person contact.”

As a solution, health experts encourage considering a variety of solutions, including eating local, staying away from restaurants that import their food and researching where brands are processed and if the food is pre-cooked.
