A small but growing list of American politicians and government officials are now supporting a civil society commission that pledged to help create a transitional government in Haiti.

The Commission for a Haitian-led Solution to the Crisis is a coalition with representatives from human rights, women’s rights and religious organizations that formed earlier this year. The group has called for a two-year transitional government, with officials chosen by representatives of civil society groups.

On a Dec. 7 conference call, Rep. Andy Levin, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and co-chair of the Haiti Caucus, called on the U.S. to support the commission as an alternative to the government of interim Prime Minister Ariel Henry. He was joined on the call by Daniel Foote, a United States foreign service officer and former special envoy to Haiti, who resigned from the latter post in September in protest against the repatriation of Haitians from the U.S.-Mexico border.
